Abstract
This study investigated the concept of fake news on social media and how it is being used as a tool in the understanding of COVID-19 disease in Nigeria. It investigated the evaluation of social media posts in the comprehension of covid19 in Nigeria. To achieve this, the study’s objectives were to find out the format in which texts on the Covid-19 pandemic were presented in the social media sites, find out the feeling of Nigerians as conveyed in their text communication through social media concerning the Covid-19 pandemic and examine the sort of language used in conveying the texts posted on social media sites during the Covid-19 pandemic outbreak. Media framing theory was adopted in this study because it holds that if issues of communication during a pandemic outbreak such as COVID-19 in Nigeria requires the media to help in framing the right messages with a view to ensuring that the disease is contained and that people do not unnecessarily die out of a lack of information or a consumption of fake information. The study found that the texts analysed remained highly negative against government efforts in handling the Covid-19 pandemic, and that due to the fake news being spread, Nigerians were not willing to listen to the government on the truth behind the Covid-19 pandemic. The study recommends that to better understand the root of a pandemic such as Covid-19, bloggers using the social media should ensure that their texts are balanced by ensuring that they liaise with mainstream journalists by including opinion and interviews from health experts, in their blogs. Doing so will help create proper understanding of the issues at stake and that opposition politicians should not see the social media platforms as means of settling political scores, especially on the issues of health by stoking the embers of hatred and disaffection as it is capable of distracting efforts towards disease containment.
